Our Future

New Children's Hospital

As part of the NHS England Specification and Standards for CHD services in England and Wales, Children’s Congenital Heart services must be co-located with all other children’s services in 2020.

The project to move the Children’s Congenital Heart Service from Glenfield hospital to the Leicester Royal Infirmary in order to meet this requirement progresses, with work due to start on site early in the new year (2019). It is anticipated that the service will move in Q2 2020/21.

The space will comprise a new Cardiac Ward, outpatient and diagnostic department, Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Theatre, Catheter Lab and parents accommodation, all situated in the Kensington Building (currently the home of women’s services).

The long-term plan is to move all Paediatric services into the Kensington Building (enabled by the development of a new Maternity Hospital), which forms part of our bid for Sustainability & Transformation Partnership funding. This would create a standalone Children’s Hospital at the LRI, adjacent to the new Children’s A&E.

The plan to move the Children’s Congenital Heart Service is not dependent upon this wider funding and has the commitment of the Trust Board as a standalone commitment to the NHS standards, along with support from all our charitable partners.
