About the Centre

East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre is based at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester. Within our purpose-built facilities we are able to care for patients with congenital heart disease from before birth to adulthood.
As a complete cardiac service, our distinguishing features are our internationally-recognised Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (EMCO) unit, our 24/7 retrieval service, our experienced cardiac team and our ability to see patients close to where they live, through our East Midlands outreach service.

Congenital heart surgery in Leicester dates back over thirty years to a time when babies and children were cared for within the adult cardiac surgical service at Groby Road Hospital.
With the move of the cardiac services to the Glenfield Hospital site in 1994, a four-bedded dedicated paediatric intensive care unit was established.  As the needs of the service increased the unit moved to its current location in 1997.
EMCHC has grown markedly over the last few years, with major expansion in both medical and surgical activity. We plan to continue to grow and develop to accommodate in excess of 450 surgical operations each year, as recommended by the National Safe and Sustainable Review of children's cardiac services.
